Council Tax - personal discounts

The full Council Tax bill assumes that there are two adults living in a dwelling. If only one adult lives in a home (as his/her main home), the Council Tax bill will be reduced by 25 per cent.

To find out if a discount may apply to your home, you should count the number of adults who live there as their main home. Certain people will not be counted when looking at the number of adults resident in a dwelling, these special groups of people are listed below.

• Full time Students, Student Nurses, Apprentices, Youth Training Trainees and Foreign Language Assistants
• Patients resident in hospital
• Patients in homes
• Residents of certain hostels
• Monks and Nuns
• 18 and 19 year olds who are at or who have just left school
• Careworkers
• Persons in detention
• Persons who are severely mentally impaired
• Members of International Headquarters and Defence Organisations
• Members of visiting forces.
