How to join the Housing Register

The Council runs the Housing Register. In order to be considered for social housing in the Vale you first need to apply to join the Housing Register. The Council nominates residents on the Housing Register to a number of housing associations when a suitable property becomes available.

Who is eligible to join the Housing Register?

You must be over the age of 16 to apply to join the Housing Register. But you can only go on the Register if you are eligible.

People who are not eligible include:

• Asylum seekers who are waiting for a decision
• People whose immigration status does not allow them to apply to services which depend on public funds
• People who have previously been guilty of unacceptable behaviour. This could include anti-social behaviour or neighbourhood nuisance  
• Owner/occupiers who have sufficient resources to enable them to secure suitable alternative accommodation
• Applicants with second homes
• Applicants who are subject to immigration control, unless they are a group specified by the Secretary of State as eligible for housing assistance.       

How can you join the Housing Register?  

You can apply using a form which can be downloaded from the right of the page. This should be completed and sent to:

When you have filled in the form we will also need to see proof of your current address. We will also need to see proof of the identity of each person who will be living in the house or flat.
         
We may also need other information, which could include:

• Proof of eligibility for social housing
• Proof of income
• Proof of any medical or other special needs.         

Sometimes we will visit you in your present home to help us assess your needs.
