Hackney carriage licences
Important information regarding Hackney Carriage and Private Hire licence applications
Following the latest government advice on social distancing, the council cannot offer licensing appointments until further notice. We are able to accept applications by email for the following:
- Hackney carriage and private hire vehicle licences
- Hackney carriage and private hire driver applications for current licence holders (renewal applications)
We are not able to accept applications from new applicants who are not already licensed by the council.
We will shortly be in a position to process applications for private hire operators. Please check the website for updates.
Hackney Carriage and Private Hire licence applications - Guidance for applicants
Please do not apply more than 4 weeks before the expiry of your licence. Renewal applications will be given priority, and then prioritised by expiry date. We will do our best to process your application as quickly as possible.
You will need to print off and complete as normal, including signing and dating the form. Please take care to complete the application form in full. Any incomplete or illegible applications will be rejected and will not be processed.
You need to scan this application and email the form to us at email@example.com, with any supporting documents, ideally in one email. If you do not have access to a scanner, you could try to photograph each page of the form but please note it must be clear and legible or we will not be able to process it. Please contact us if you are unable to do this.
When we are ready to process your application, we will call you to take payment over the phone. If there are any issues with the phone payment system, you will be required to send us a cheque, made payable to Vale of White Horse District Council.
When we have a completed correct application and payment, we will process the application and issue the licence. We will then post this licence out to you by first class recorded delivery (someone will need to be in to sign for this). You will not be able to collect the plate from the office. Please do not telephone the offices at this time, as this will only prevent us from processing applications.
All hackney carriages that operate within the Vale of White Horse District must be licensed under the terms of the Town Police Clauses Act 1847 and the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.
For information on taximeters and roof signs, please contact suppliers listed below. The Council does not recommend any supplier and others may be found through a standard internet search.

Where damage that requires repair arises from an accident, the driver is required to report the accident to the council. The council's primary concern is to ensure that the vehicle is in a safe and suitable condition to be used as a licensed vehicle. Please email a completed to firstname.lastname@example.org within three working days of the accident and bring the vehicle for inspection if requested.
