Baby Brown Bins on offer

<< back to news list

Friday 8 February 2008

Residents of the Vale who want to compost their garden waste and cardboard now have more choice in how they do this.

The Vale of White Horse District Council introduced a fortnightly service for the collection of garden waste and cardboard in 2005 and so far more than 11,000 brown bins have been delivered to homes in the District.

And now in response to feedback from some residents who said they found the 240-litre brown bin too large, the Council has introduced a smaller bin with a capacity of 140 litres. In exceptional circumstances biodegradable sacks are also available.

At the same time the previous arrangement for the collection of green garden waste sacks, which were collected with refuse, has been discontinued meaning that much more garden waste will be composted instead of sent to landfill for disposal.

The Vale is already recycling or composting 33 per cent of household waste produced in the District, and with the expansion of the Brown Bin service it is hoped this figure will continue to rise in the coming year.

Cllr Jenny Hannaby, Executive Member for Contracts and Procurement, which includes waste management, said: "We are pleased to be able to offer an additional option to help residents of the Vale responsibly dispose of their waste. This is an important improvement to a very popular service and will help the Vale to meet the demanding figures for diversion of materials from landfill in the coming years."

Full details of the Brown Bin service, which costs £29 a year, can be found in our Garden waste website pages, or by contacting the Council on 01235 520202. Application packs are also available from all Vale Council offices.
