Scheduled ancient monuments

Some local historic sites which are of national importance have been designated as scheduled ancient monuments. By being added to the list or “schedule” this means they are given legal protection.

English Heritage takes the lead in identifying sites in England which should be placed on the schedule by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

The Vale has 65 scheduled ancient monuments, including the White Horse itself.

The full list of scheduled ancient monuments can be found in Appendix 3 of the Council’s Local Plan. Policies for their protection are contained in Chapter 6 of the Plan. Both these documents can be downloaded from the right of the page.

Further general information, advice and guidance on scheduled Ancient Monuments can be found on the English Heritage website.
