Terrorism

Following the terrorist attacks of 7 July 2005 in London, everyone in Britain is acutely aware of the threat of terrorism in our country.

In order to tackle the threat new, stronger laws against terrorism have been introduced. The Home Office has also substantially increased its counter terrorism work.

Plans for dealing with terrorism incidents are led by a cross-government initiative, called the Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Nuclear (CBRN) Resilience Programme. This programme aims to ensure that, in the event of a terrorist incident, the response from all concerned will be quick and effective, so lives are saved and the impact on property and the environment is minimised.

To find out more about the work being carried out to combat the terrorism threat and the plans to deal with any such incident, please see the Home Office website. On this site you can also check the current threat level and get advice on how you can help keep yourself safe.

Report suspicious behaviour

People are advised to remain alert to the possible threat of terrorism. For example, keep an eye out for suspect bags, packages or vehicles, or people acting suspiciously at stations and airports, and report anything suspicious to the police or the appropriate authorities.

  • If you have information about possible bomb threats or other immediate threats, call 999.
  • If you have tip-offs or confidential information about possible terrorist activity, call the police anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321
