What are the penalties if someone is caught committing benefit fraud

People suspected of benefit theft face:

  • Having to pay back all the money they have illegally claimed in full to the Council together with any court costs that have been incurred
  • Prosecution through the courts
  • A prison sentence, or suspended prison sentence
  • A fine
  • A community order
  • A criminal record
  • Being named and shamed in the local media.
