Bird scarers

Bird scarers are used by farmers to protect crops from attack by birds.

However, if used thoughtlessly, the device (which imitates the sound of gunfire) can seriously annoy and disturb neighbours.

The Environmental Protection Team may be able to deal with noise problems caused by bird scarers under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

If a farmer is considering using a bird scarer we would advise they follow the good practice guidance as outlined in the National Farmers Union Code of Practice on use of bird scarers.
