Environmental information enquiries

How you can you find out if your property is on contaminated land

If you are concerned you live on a site that might be contaminated you should contact the Environmental Protection Team - see the contact details on the right - to find out whether we hold any information.

All requests relating to contaminated or potentially contaminated land should be made in writing to the council, to ensure the correct interpretation of the question being asked and to check whether the legal right to seek information still exists. The following information should be provided:

  • The address of the land in question
  • A map showing the location of the land and clearly delineating the boundary of the land in question
  • Any reasonable and specific questions regarding the land.

There is a standard cost for all Environmental Information Enquiries relating to parcels of land of £38.60 per hour (minimum charge of £38.60). A payment or an agreement to be invoiced should be provided with the request.

In addition to contacting the Environmental Protection Team it might also be beneficial to contact the council's Planning and Building Control teams. Both these departments might hold records which could be useful in understanding the condition of the land. Information may also be available from commercial suppliers of environmental data.
