Voting by post
Anyone on the register of electors can apply to vote by post without having a reason for doing so.
Postal votes are not processed and dispatched on the same day that your application is received. They are printed in batches by an external printing company. If you are going to be away on the day of an election, please check with the Elections team to find out when your postal vote will be dispatched.
You can apply for a postal vote at any time until 5pm, 11 working days before an election.
The deadline for making changes to, or cancelling, existing arrangements is also 11 working days before an election.
Voting in an election
If you have not received your postal vote 5 days before an election you will need to contact the Elections team. They will be able to confirm if you have been set up for a postal vote and when they can reissue another out to you.
If you are set up to vote by post, you are unable to be issued a ballot paper at the polling station. Postal votes can only be re-issued up to 5pm on the day of an election. You need to let the Elections team know in advance if you have not received your postal vote.
Cancelling a postal vote
If you are already set up with a postal vote and you would like to change this to voting at the polling station or voting by proxy, then you must cancel your postal vote by the postal vote deadline.
You can only cancel a postal vote by letting us know in writing. You can email and let us know your name, address and that you would like your postal vote to be cancelled.
If you are living overseas and the postal service is unreliable or post takes a long time to reach you, then we would recommend that you apply for a proxy vote instead.
