House names and numbers

The council is responsible for naming and numbering properties in the area.

It is very important to get properties formally named by the council and to use the correct address for them as emergency services, gas, water, electric, and telephone companies and insurance companies will all locate the property by the information we provide.

Information for the public

If you want to alter the official postal address for your property, please contact the Address Management Officer (using the contact details on the right) as soon as possible so that they can make the necessary arrangements.

If your address is numbered already and you wish to add a name this is called an "Alias" and your house number must still be used in your address.

The Royal Mail postcodes checks whether or not your address will conflict with another in your postcode area.

We would strongly suggest you do not use your desired address or print any letterheads or stationery until you have a formal notification from us as to your new address.

Information for developers

Developers of new houses that need to be named and numbered should contact the Address Management Officer with a site layout marked out with the plot numbers.

They also need to provide any street names they propose to give to the road(s) for consideration. These cannot be guaranteed as they may conflict with others in the area, and the Town or Parish Council may have other proposals.

Developers should make contact with the Address Management Officer - using the contact details on the right - as soon as possible so they can consult with the relevant Town or Parish Councils and other external agencies such as the Royal Mail, which checks whether or not the proposed road name will conflict with another locally. Once agreed Royal Mail will reserve the postcode.

Before people move into the new housing the developer will need to contact Royal Mail Postcodes to bring the new postcode online.

Cost of the service

We will aim to process individual applications within 10 working days; however, larger numbering schemes will take longer and the applicant will be notified of this at the initial stage and will be kept informed during the process.
