Bulky waste collections

The council's contractors can remove large or bulky items such as dining room tables, settees and beds for a charge of £31 for up to three items and £6.65 per item up to a maximum of six items per collection. If you have more than six items you would need to book another collection day for any remaining items.

Before you contact us to book your bulky waste collection, have a good think about whether you have any other big items to dispose of.  Once we have processed your booking, we are unable to make any alterations or add any other items – even if you have only booked one or two items.

Please be aware our contractors are not able to go inside a property to collect the items, although they will collect from inside a garage or shed if a waiver form has been completed prior to collection.

Examples of what we collect include:

  • furniture (such as sofas, chairs and tables)
  • televisions
  • washing machines
  • carpets (underlay and carpet would be classed as two items).
  • mattresses

The council can also arrange for collection of fridges and freezers, although these should be cleaned and emptied of all food before collection. Please note that there is a charge of £24.25 per collection.

We are currently taking part in a trial to recycle mattresses. Any mattresses we collect as a part of our bulky waste service will be processed at Culham and the constituent parts recycled. The current trial runs until February.

We cannot collect DIY waste such as fixtures or fittings. Please note if you pay someone to dispose of this kind of waste you need to check they are a registered waste carrier and and make sure they give you a waste transfer note to state where the rubbish is being taken from and to. For more information on this see the Environment Agency's website Environment Agency This link will take you to an external website... .

You can also take bulky waste items to a County waste recycling centre.

How to order a bulky waste collection

The quickest and easiest way to request removal of your bulky items from your home is to telephone us and pay using your credit or debit card - call the council on 01235 520202 and ask for a bulky waste collection.

You can download the relevant form from the related documents section on the right of the page, complete it and post it to the council with your cheque.

No changes can be made to an order once it has been booked. We can cancel a booking and make a full refund as long as we are informed by 11am the working day before the collection was due.

Give your furniture to a good home

Alternatively, before throwing good quality furniture away, please contact homeless charity Emmaus, which runs a furniture store in Oxford that collects reusable furniture, electrical appliances and other household items from anywhere in Oxfordshire. The items are then sold on to raise money for the charity. Call 01865 763698 or email furniture@emmausoxford.org and explain what you want to donate, or for more information see the Emmaus website This link will take you to an external website... .
