How to report fly-tipping and dumped waste

Fly-tipping is illegal deposit of waste on land or in water

If you come across some fly-tipping, do not remove anything from the site as we need it for evidence in our investigation.

If you have witnessed someone dumping rubbish, please tell us:

  • date and time of the event
  • its location
  • type and quantity of waste dumped
  • description of the person(s) carrying out the fly-tipping
  • vehicle description and registration
  • any company details (i.e. name on the side of a company van or vehicle)
  • any other information felt to be helpful for the council’s investigation

  • when you first noticed it

What happens next?

After we we’ve received a report of fly-tipping and it is on public land, we open an investigation and arrange to remove the waste.

If waste has been dumped on private land, we can investigate but it is the responsibility of the landowner to remove it.

If someone is caught fly-tipping they could be issued a fixed penalty notice of £1,000. 

Anyone convicted in court for fly-tipping could receive an unlimited fine or imprisoned.
