Time and money

If you want to become a taxi driver you will need to apply for a licence.

The process can take quite a long time and it will cost you money.

English language skills

You will need to have a good level of written and spoken English.  This is so you can communicate with customers and other people in your role as a licensed driver.

Tests, checks and training

You will also need to provide a satisfactory medical report, a criminal records check, a practical driving assessment certificate, attend and pass a disability and safeguarding training course and pass a written knowledge test.

Vehicle licence

You may also need to apply for a licence for the vehicle that you will be driving – this is to make sure the vehicle is suitable and safe.

Starting a company?

If you want to start up a company to take bookings, you may also need a private hire vehicle operator’s licence.
