FAQs about the work (file will download automatically when you click on it)

Portway car park will have very limited parking from Monday 22 July due to refurbishment work. The work will include improvements to reduce surface water flooding and removing potholes. Bay markings and lighting will also be improved at the car park.

During the work, the nearest car parks are Limborough Road (OX12 9AJ) or Mill Street (OX12 9AJ). Any parking permits for Portway will be valid in these car parks during the duration of the work.

Pedestrian access will be maintained, although access will be limited while final surfacing is completed. The public toilets at the site will be open for the duration of the work (although access will also be limited at times during the final surfacing phase).

The project is being funded by money from Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), which comes from developers when they build in the area, and Thames Water.

A rain garden is being installed at the car park to help manage rainwater and prevent overwhelming the drains during times of heavy rain.

A rain garden collects water that runs off a car park surface rather than allowing it to pool and overwhelm the drains. The plants and soil then filter the rain resulting in cleaner water going into the water table below.

Diagram of how a rain garden works. It shows rain falling on the car park, running along gullies to the rain garden and filtering through the plants, soil and gravel. The plants also help evaporate the water into the air.

The work will also lead to an increase in green spaces, including along the footpath, that will result in increased biodiversity.

We will update this page with more details and information including on the progress of the work.
