The recruitment and selection process

Your completed application will be treated in confidence and will only be made available to those staff involved in the management or administration of the post.

The information contained within the Equal Opportunities monitoring pages of the application form is required to assist the Council in its monitoring of the Equal Opportunities policy. Those pages of the form are detached before the form reaches the shortlisting or selection panel.

Shortlisting

Shortlisting will normally take place within ten working days of the closing date and will be carried out by assessing the evidence on the application form in relation to the person specification for the role. All applicants will be notified by post as to whether they have been successful or not.

The Council is committed to the employment and career development of people with disabilities. We have been awarded the Disability Symbol by the Employment Service which means we guarantee an interview to anyone with a disability whose application meets the essential criteria for the post.

More information about the Council's Equality in Employment Policy can be found by viewing or downloading the summary of the policy from the right of the page.

Interview

If you are shortlisted for interview we will endeavour to provide you with at least a week’s notice of the interview date. In the invitation to interview letter you will be informed about the selection techniques to be used which may include specific work related exercises. The exercises are always related to the job and will assist the panel in selecting the best person for the job.

If you are invited to interview you will be entitled to make a claim for travelling and associated expenditure.  Further information will be provided when you are invited to interview.

At the interview you will be given the opportunity to ask the panel any questions you have about the Council or the post to which you have applied.

All offers of employment are subject to the receipt of two references and health clearance that are satisfactory to the Vale of White Horse District Council. All staff new to local government are subject to a probationary period of six months.

Please note that certain positions, for example those working with children or vulnerable adults, will be subject to a satisfactory police and/or social services check. Further details will be provided if applicable.

As a Council we are committed to ensuring that we recruit the best person for the job and that we follow our recruitment and selection procedures in doing so. If you do not feel that we have met your expectations in this regard please contact the HR Officer on 01235 520202, extension 512.
