How to make a benefit claim

To make a claim for housing or Council Tax benefits you need to fill in an application form. This form can be downloaded from the right of the page.

Normally your benefit will be treated as made on the day the Council receives the application form and benefit will start from the following Monday. However if you inform the Council that you intend to make a claim, for example, by email or telephone and then get the application form to the Council within one month of this date, your claim will be treated as made on the day you first notified the Council.

Forms can also be obtained by contacting the Benefits Section using the contact details on the right, or by calling in to the Local Service Points at Abingdon or Wantage, or the Council's area office in Faringdon.

The form looks complicated and asks for a lot of information. We need this information to enable us to assess your benefit correctly.

If you need help to fill in the form please do not hesitate to call in to Abingdon or Wantage Local Services Points where our staff will be able to guide you through it. If you have mobility problems and cannot get to one of our offices please contact the Beneifts Section using the contact details on the right so we can either help you over the telephone or arrange for one of our officers to visit you.

The form asks for proof of your income, savings and identity. We need this information to check your details and verfiy your claim. This is part of the verification process - for more details see our page on How we check each benefit claim.

Please do not delay submitting your form even if it is not fully completed or you do not have the necessary documents to hand. You can lose money if you do not submit your claim as soon as possible. You can provide all outstanding details later on.
