Grants to help you improve your home

The Council can offer financial assistance to enable home repairs and adaptations for the disabled and vulnerable to be carried out.

This funding enables all those eligible to enjoy a better quality of life, while also improving the general condition of houses throughout the District.

This financial assistance comes in the form of grants of which there are two types available:

Mandatory grants

There is only one mandatory grant which is called the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). The Council must provide this grant to disabled persons who have been formally referred to it by an Occupational Therapist from Social Services.

Some of the items paid for by the grant include stair lifts, level-access showers, manoeuvrability aids (including handrails), wheelchair ramps, level access entry to properties, and kitchen adaptations. The DFG is a means-tested grant and applicants may need to make a financial contribution towards the cost of any works.

Discretionary grants

These grants are provided at the discretion of the Council depending on its approved Housing Renewal Policy at the time.

Applicants should be aware that grant conditions are subject to change and the Council can only provide grants on the basis of current grant conditions. Grants are available subject to budget. The grants budget is prioritised to allow mandatory grants to be given preference over discretionary grants.

To be eligible for most of the discretionary grants applicants must meet the same eligiblity crietria set out under the Government Warm Front Grant. This states that applicants must be in receipt of an income-related or disability-related benefit and be over the age of 60 or have a child under the age of 16. A complete list if the eligiblility crieteria is available on the Warm Front website.
