Renting from housing associations

In 1995 the Council transferred its housing stock to a separate organisation called the Vale Housing Association. There are a number of other housing associations operating in the Vale – see here for our page on Housing Association contact details.

Housing associations provide affordable homes which normally have lower rent levels and greater security of tenure than private rented accommodation. These homes are let through the Choice Based Lettings scheme which is adminstered by the Vale of White Horse District Council's Housing Advice Team. The scheme allows applicants to view available housing association properties and then “bid” for them.  For more details about the scheme please see our page on Choice Based Lettings.

Depending on the type of property, its location and an applicant's housing need, it can be several years before a household makes a successful bid for a housing association property. It is therefore important to consider other housing solutions, particularly if you need to move in the short to medium term.

Housing associations also provide affordable homes that are specifically allocated to older households. Some properties are designated for applicants over 55 while sheltered accommodation is available for the over 60s. There is normally a shorter waiting time for these properties and if you would like to apply you will need to be registered on the Choice Based Lettings Scheme. For an application form or further assistance, contact the  Housing Advice Team.
