Advice for young people

Anyone over the age of 16 can join the Council’s Housing Register unless you are an asylum seeker, or your immigration status does not allow you to apply for social housing, or you have been guilty of unacceptable behaviour.

If you wish to apply, you will need to complete an application for a housing association home form. Remember, when you complete the form you are not applying for a particular home; you are applying to be included in the Housing Register. When you have joined the Housing Register, you can place “bids” for properties through the Choice Based Lettings system. There is an acute shortage of social housing in the Vale of White Horse. It may take many years to make a successful bid on the Choice Based Letting scheme. It is therefore important to consider your other housing options.

The Abingdon Bridge - This is a place where young people can get advice and support on their housing issues. They can provide information on what benefits you are entitled to claim, completing forms, advice if you have recently become unemployed, advice if you are on a very low income, counselling, and advice on drugs, alcohol and sexual health. The Abingdon Bridge Project is based at 27 Bridge Street, Abingdon.

The Citizens Advice Bureau- The Citizens Advice Bureau offer independent advice on a number of issues including what benefits you are entitled to claim for. They can also help with any financial difficulties that you may be experiencing. The Abingdon CAB is based at Old Abbey House, Abingdon.
