The Right to Acquire scheme was introduced to give eligible tenants the legal right to buy the home they currently rent at a discount. To qualify for the scheme you need to have spent at least two years as a public sector tenant.
It should be noted that not all properties or all housing association tenants are eligible under the Right to Acquire scheme. For more information, please refer to this page of the Shelter website which gives a good overview of the scheme.
The Council used to own its own stock of housing prior to its transfer to the Vale Housing Association in 1995. The Right to Acquire does not relate to any housing owned by the Council which is both very small in number and provided purely on a temporary basis for homeless clients.
If you wish to discuss the possibility of buying the housing association property you currently rent, you should contact the housing association directly to obtain further information, to ascertain your eligibility and current level of discount.
