Accommodation lists
The Housing Advice Team produces a weekly list of private rented accommodation which is available from Council offices. This list covers the whole of the Vale of White Horse District as well as certain areas outside the District. To view the latest list see Private rented accommodation list.
Local newspapers and newsagents are also another source of information if you are looking to secure accommodation in the private sector. For more ideas see How to find private rented accommodation.
Housing benefit
Housing benefit is money you can claim to help towards the cost of the rent if you are on a low wage or not working and is paid by the Council. However housing benefit doesn’t always cover the cost of the rent. For more details see our pages on Housing benefit.
Most single people under the age of 25 who pay rent to a private landlord will only get housing benefit to pay for a single room in a shared house. This is called a “single room rate”. If housing benefit decides that the rent is too expensive you may then have to make up the difference from your own money.
Rent deposit guarantee scheme
The Council's Deposit Guarantee Scheme is intended to help people who are homeless or in housing need, by offering landlords/ladies a guarantee to cover loss or damage to the property (beyond fair wear and tear). For more information see our page on Deposit guarantee scheme.
