Proposals for Abingdon

Here is a summary of the main proposals for Abingdon. A map detailing these proposed sites can be downloaded from the right of the page.

Housing: Land south west of Abingdon has been identified as a potential site for 1,500 new homes. If housing was developed here it could encourage investment in the town centre which could include commercial leisure facilities like restaurants. It may also contribute towards the restoration of the Wilts and Berks canal. However, such a development would generate more traffic and would need to include a new road linking the Drayton and Marcham Roads which would need to cross the River Ock. As an alternative, extra housing could be built in Wantage instead – see our page Proposals for Wantage and Grove.

Transport: The Council will be pressing for a new four-way junction onto the A34 at Lodge Hill, the reopening of the A34 slip road at Drayton and a new bypass and river crossing in the south west of the town. The southern bypass would start with the Marcham Road to Drayton Road link detailed above, if housing is to be developed.

Town centre: The transformation of Abingdon centre is one of the key aims for the town over the next 20 years. This will include developing the Bury Street precinct and Charter areas to improve the vitality of the town by attracting varied and specialist businesses. This could also lead to enlarging the library and health centre. The Old Gaol will be sympathetically converted to offer shops, restaurants and apartments and Nags Head Island will be a centre for improved leisure activities on the River Thames.
