The Core Strategy

The Core Strategy

The first policy document that the Council is preparing as part of the Local Development Framework is the Core Strategy. This will replace the Local Plan, and will set out the spatial vision, spatial objectives, policies and a monitoring and implementation framework for the Vale. The Core Strategy will be used to help determine future planning applications.

As part of the preparation of the Core Strategy the Council published an issues and options document Your Vale Your Future for public consultation in autumn 2007. This report, which can be downloaded from the right of the page, set out some of the issues we think we will be facing in the future and some possible options for tackling them. The responses received as part of the public consultation will inform work on the next stage, which is the preparation of the preferred options. Responses to the consultation can be viewed by downloading the "Summary of responses received" document from the right of the page. There will be further opportunities for people to comment on the strategy as work progresses.

The Council is required to carry out a sustainability appraisal of all development plan documents. This involves an assessment of the sustainability effects of all the policies and proposals contained within each document so that any undesireable impacts can be reduced or removed. The sustainability appraisal process will run alongside the production of the relevant document and will be open to consultation at the same times.

The Core Strategy scoping report, which was published by the Council in March 2007, and the Core Strategy Sustainability Statement, which was published in November 2007, can both be viewed or downloaded from the right of the page.

The Council expected to consult on the next stage of Preferred Options in June/July 2008. This has been delayed to take account of changes to regulations and a delay in the Government’s response to the Panel’s Report on the South East Plan. The Council now expects to carry out this consultation in January/February 2009.
