Conservation and listed buildings

There are more than 2,000 listed buildings in the Vale, ranging from magnificent country houses to modest cottages. The following pages give details about the different types of listed buildings, how to apply to get a building listed as well as advice about altering and extending listed buildings.

The Vale has 52 conservation areas which are defined as "areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance". These pages explain what it means to own a property in a conservation area, how to apply for conservation area consent and provides links to the Vale’s existing conservation area appraisals.

There are also pages about scheduled ancient monuments. These are historic sites of national importance that have been given legal protection.

If you would like any more advice on any of these subjects please get in touch with the Environmental Policy Team using the contact details on the right.
