Appeals against the rateable value of a property are made direct to the Valuation Office Agency.
Ratepayers must continue to make payments based on the existing entry until such time as a valuation officer from the Agency formally amends the entry in the Rating list. If your appeal is successful any overpayment will be refunded to you.
Ratepayers do not have to be represented in any appeal and appeals can be made free of charge. However a ratepayer may wish to appoint someone to represent them for which the person appointed might make a charge. If you wish to do this, you should be aware that members of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Institute of Revenues Rating and Valuation (IRRV) are qualified and regulated by rules of professional conduct designed to protect the public from misconduct.
Before you employ a rating advisor you should check that they have the necessary knowledge and expertise to assist you, as well as appropriate indemnity insurance. Take great care and, if necessary, seek further advice before entering into any contract.
Further information regarding appeals information on appeals, and how to make one, can be found on the VOA website or from your local Valuation Office:
