UK Youth Parliament elections for Oxfordshire – February 2009

Elections for the UK Youth Parliament are being held in schools in the Vale in February 2009.

The Youth Parliament is an independent national charity which aims to give young people a voice. There are currently more than 300 elected Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs).

In Oxfordshire there are three MYPs, supported by Deputies (DMYPs) representing North Oxfordshire, the City and South Oxfordshire.

Chris Tolley was elected to represent South Oxfordshire (which includes the Vale of White Horse) as an MYP in January 2008 when 3,774 young people in the area voted and five candidates stood for election.

Chris is now campaigning to help make the 2009 elections a success, and is working hard to encourage more schools and youth clubs to take part and to give young people the opportunity to vote or stand as a candidate.

Anyone aged between 11 and 18 who lives in South Oxfordshire can vote in the elections which will take place during the week of 9 February and must be completed by Thursday 12 February with the results being announced on Friday 13 February at an event at County Hall, Oxford.

For more information about the elections including how to register your school to hold an election please contact Karen Tolley, the Vale’s Youth Development Co-ordinator, using the contact details on the right.
