At the Youth Forum on 3 October 2007, 13 young people were elected to a Youth Cabinet.
Here is an article from Youth Cabinet member Sarah Sparkes about what the group is hoping to achieve:
"We are the Youth Cabinet, a group of lively, determined young people, providing the voice of the Youth of the Vale of the White Horse. The Youth Forum elected us in 2007, and since then we haven't looked back. We usually have one meeting before every Youth Forum meeting, and one meeting after, although if we need to we can call other meetings. We like to be heard, and we're throwing away the stereotypical teenager idea by showing an interest in things that concern us, and trying to do something about them.
"Our first main project was to improve the appalling prices of public transport for under 18s, this was to try and make it easier for young people to get places, especially as so many of us have to pay to get to school!
"We have also been joining the fight with mosquito alarms, these screechy high-pitched alarms can only be heard by under 21s, and we feel they are discriminating against children and young people, Julian Brewer, a member of the Cabinet, wrote an article in the spring edition of Vale Views about his side of the story and has received some very positive feedback!
"We have also had a meeting with councillors, the purpose was to introduce ourselves and explain what we were about, and I think we all felt this went well.
"Recently we have been putting together plans to set up a new youth magazine, this will feature events, and news relevant to young people. So if you have anything you’d like to say to us feel free to contact us via the Youth Forum, or Karen Tolley, using the contact details on the right. Thank you!"
