Dog owners who fail to clean up their pet's mess were encouraged to change their ways as part of a new campaign which was trialled in Faringdon.
In June 2008, the Council piloted a two-week initiative which aimed to reduce the amount of dog mess on the town’s paths and pavements by reminding people to clean up after their dogs.
Dog Fouling Action Areas were declared in areas of the town which were regularly or heavily fouled, and the message “CLEAN IT UP” was stencilled onto the pavement next to any dog mess spotted.
Clean it up
The idea was that the vivid yellow warnings daubed in chalk on pavements would not only help pedestrians to avoid the dog mess, but would also remind dog owners to clean it up next time.
The warnings were left in place for a week before they were cleaned away although the dog mess was removed by the Council’s street cleansing contractors Veolia as soon as possible.
For full details of how the project went, including feedback from residents who were surveyed following the trial, please see the report on the right of the page.
Following evaluation, it is planned that this project will be carried out at other locations within the Vale.
