The Bury Street shopping precinct, Abingdon

The Bury Street shopping precinct is set to get a facelift after refurbishment plans were approved.

An agreement was reached in November 2006 between the Council and Threadneedle Properties, which manage the precinct, for refurbishment work to be carried out.

Following planning approval in February 2008, work on the precinct should be started during 2009.

The project will be carried out in two phases. The first involves work to freshen up the appearance of the Bury Street buildings. This will include replacing the solid concrete canopies above the shops on both sides of the precinct with new modern glass canopies. The upper fascia of the precinct will also be redecorated. The shop units on the entrance to the precinct will have new timber sash windows added which are more in keeping with the character of Market Place. New street furniture such as bins and benches will also be added, and two shop units will be combined.

The second stage of the facelift will see the two kiosk shops near Woolworths replaced with a new two-storey shop. People will still be able to walk from Bury Street to Bath Street via a walkway next to the shop. Eight units will be combined into four larger units and several shops will be extended to make larger units which are more attractive for national retail chains.
