The brown bin scheme

The brown bin scheme was introduced to help Vale residents easily recycle their garden waste and cardboard and to reduce the amount of waste that was sent to landfill.

The scheme has made a major contribution to helping the Council meet tough recycling and composting targets. In 2007 33 per cent of all waste put out for collection in the Vale is being either recycled or composted.

The brown bins are available in two sizes – either 240 litres or 140 litres – and are collected from outside your house every fortnight. There is an annual rental and emptying charge of £33 for either size bin.

The garden waste and cardboard will go to a local site for composting, and is then used on fields in the area as a soil supplement.

In extreme circumstances biodegradable sacks are available in quantities of 50 at £33, but special requests must be made for this service, and any accepted will be subject to a visit to confirm suitability.
