What can and cannot go in brown bins

The following can go in a brown bin:

  • Cardboard (but cannot be put into biodegradeable sacks) *
  • Grass mowing
  • Tree branches & leaves
  • Prunings and twigs
  • Flowers and plants
  • Moss and weeds (including couch grass and ground elder)
  • Shredded paper
  • Yellow Pages

The following cannot go in a brown bin:

  • Food or kitchen waste
  • Cat or dog faeces
  • Vacuum dust or fire cinders
  • Soil or stones
  • Wood that has been treated
  • Tetrapak cartons (milk, juice, etc)
  • Wrapping paper

* Please be aware we are introducing a new rubbish and recycling collection service on 4 October.From then you will not be able to put cardboard in your brown bin and will instead need to put it out for recycling.To find out more about the new service please see  Your new waste collection service.

IMPORTANT: Japanese Knotweed must not be placed in brown bins. For more information see this page of the Environment Agency website.

Bins containing any unsuitable items will not be emptied. Our waste contractors will leave notification as to why the bin has been left and will not normally return until the next scheduled collection day.
