The Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action (OCVA) is a voluntary organisation covering all of Oxfordshire, and as part of their activities they run a furniture store which takes good but unwanted furniture from residents and then makes it available to families in need.
How to donate furniture
Contact OCVA between 9.30am and 12.30pm for details of their collection service or to arrange to drop off items of furniture at their premises in Oxford. A wide range of items is accepted, a full list of which is shown below. In particular white goods, such as fridges and washing machines, are always in short supply. Donations of these (in working order) are appreciated.
What happens to the furniture?
People who need furniture are referred to OCVA from a number of sources, including local authorities, social and health care workers, drug rehabilitation organisations and domestic violence organisations. Items are sold on at the lowest possible price and will even be passed on free-of-charge in cases of particular hardship.
Items required for re-use
OCVA will take most household furniture in a clean and tidy re usable condition.
Soft furnishings such as sofas and beds will need to comply with Fire and Furnishing Regulations of 1998 and should carry a label stating so. Goods will be checked for damage and suitability. Anything with rips, stains, woodworm or peeling or missing veneer will be rejected.
OCVA also take household electrical appliances as long as they pass a visual examination, checking for obvious signs of damage, like broken casings, ripped fridge door seals and rusty microwaves.
Examples of items that OCVA will take:
