Waste reduction and recycling rates in the Vale

The Vale has a target to recycle or compost 31 per cent of all household waste during the year 2007/8 and 2008/9. In the first six months of 2007/8 we diverted 33 per cent of waste from landfill, already exceeding those targets. Plans are in hand to divert even more waste over the next few years and any new initiatives will be announced on this website and in Council newsletter Vale Views. To download current and previous copies of this newsletter please see Vale Views.

The European Union has agreed a law requiring all member countries to cut down on the amount of rubbish that is sent to landfill, and this means that in Oxfordshire we have to reduce the amount by 25 per cent by the year 2009/10, and 50 per cent by 2012/13.

If we do not meet these targets, we will be fined by the UK Government. If we do nothing, and continue to landfill the amounts we do today, we would have to pay a fine of £3 million in 2009-10, meaning service cuts or an extra £13 charge for every household on band D Council tax. These fines would go up every year.
