Frequently asked questions - recycling

Why don’t you collect all types of plastics?

At present only plastic bottles can be placed in Green Boxes for collection due to logistical and financial restraints. Space on board the Green Box collection vehicles is limited, and if we were to extend the range of plastics collected to all mixed soft plastics it is estimated that a further two vehicles would need to be added to the fleet, costing approximately £250,000 a year. The situation will be reviewed at the end of the current contract, but in the meantime mixed plastics can be taken to one of the County waste recycling centres or to some Vale recycling collection points – please check to find your nearest point.

Why can’t we recycle cardboard in our green boxes?

The design of the current collection vehicles means that it would be very difficult to collect cardboard because of the bulkiness of the material. Cardboard can however be taken to one of the County waste recycling centres or to some Vale recycling collection points – check to find your nearest point. Cardboard can also be collected for composting as part of the Council’s brown bin scheme – please our pages about The brown bin scheme for more details.

What are you doing about garden waste going to landfill?

The amount of green waste being taken to landfill has to be drastically reduced in order to meet UK and EU targets in the next few years. Home composters have been offered to residents at special prices and the Council’s brown bin scheme was also introduced for the collection of garden waste and cardboard. This scheme has already made a major contribution to helping the Council meet tough recycling and composting targets. For more information about the brown bin scheme and discounted composters please see our Garden waste pages.

Will you be introducing fortnightly refuse collections? Are you considering introducing wheelie bins for refuse?

Plans for dealing with household waste in Oxfordshire are currently under discussion as part of the Oxfordshire Waste Partnership review of waste services throughout the County. When the current waste contract comes to an end there may be a requirement for changes in the way that waste is collected and dealt with in the Vale. Any proposed changes will be subject to consultation with residents prior to implementation.
