Why recycle?

Each household produces around one tonne of waste a year. It is also estimated that for every tonne of household waste produced, around ten tonnes of waste is created in manufacturing and packaging products that make up household waste. So in effect the average household is responsible for the production of eleven tonnes of waste a year - enough to fill an entire refuse collection vehicle. Most of this waste is buried in landfill sites, which can have significant environmental impacts.

Recycling not only saves natural resources but can also save energy and reduce pollution. For example producing aluminium drinks cans from recycled materials uses only five per cent of the energy used to produce the same can from virgin materials.

Recycling also reduces the amount of waste needed to be collected by refuse collection crews, lowering collection costs and the amount of pollution which is generated by refuse collection vehicles. It also reduces the amount of organic waste that is deposited in landfill sites.
