Bulky waste collections
We have re-opened our bulky waste collection service for large household items. It is limited to online orders only and there are a limited number of bookings available.
The bulky waste collection service was temporarily stopped to allow the councils’ waste contractor, Biffa, to prioritise the important kerbside household collections while members of their waste collection crews were off sick or self-isolating. Biffa has now built up sufficient resilience in its workforce and can now provide the paid-for service again. The situation is being regularly monitored and residents should be aware that if staffing levels fall the service may need to be suspended again.

Examples of what we collect:
- furniture (such as sofas, chairs, and tables)
- washing machines
- fridges and freezers*
* You must clean and empty fridges and freezers of all food before we collect them.
Items we don't collect
We cannot collect any type of commercial waste and DIY waste such as fixtures or fittings. This includes fridge freezers manufactured for commercial use. Please note if you pay someone to dispose of this kind of waste you need to check they are a registered waste carrier and make sure they give you a waste transfer note to state where the rubbish is being taken from and to. When you book, you will be given a number of collection days to choose from. We will aim to collect on the day you have chosen however we may have to call you back to offer an alternative date.
The items must be visible and accessible on your property from 7am on the agreed collection day. The items must be left at the edge of your property next to the public highway. If you live in a flat or other property and we normally collect your rubbish from communal bins, the items must be put out next to where we collect the communal bins from. If they aren’t in the correct location when the crew come to make the collection, they won’t be collected and no refund will be due.

A bulky waste collection costs £40 for up to three items and £8 per additional item, up to a maximum of six items per collection. If you have more than six items you would need to book another collection day for any remaining items.
Before you contact us to book your bulky waste collection, have a good think about whether you have any other big items to dispose of. Once we have processed your booking, we are unable to make any alterations or add any other items – even if you have only booked one or two items.
How to book your collection
You can still pay by debit/credit card or by cheque/postal order made payable to Vale of White Horse District Council. Before paying by cheque, please contact the Waste Team. You need to write your address, and the job number we give you, on the back of the cheque and send it to the address in the Contact section of this page.
No changes can be made to an order once it has been booked. We can cancel a booking and make a full refund as long as we are informed by 11am the working day before the collection was due.
Please note that if your payment isn't processed, your slot won't be booked.
Biffa collects your bulky waste, not the council. If anyone claims to be from the council and says they're collecting your waste, please refuse this and call us on 01235 422406 to let us know.
