3.01 Introduction

- The Vale of White Horse District Council (“the Council”) has a Vision to build and safeguard a fair, open and compassionate community and has a number of stated objectives designed to turn this Vision into action. The Council aims to provide high quality services to the people of the Vale and is committed to strengthening local democracy and freedom of information. However, the Council recognises that when carrying out its functions it obtains and deals with a significant amount of information about people and owes a duty to individuals to balance the principles of openness and fairness to protect privacy at all times.

- The Data Protection Act 1998 sets out a national framework to regulate the processing of information relating to individuals, monitored by the Information Commissioner who can issue Codes of Practice and guidance on the nature and extent of the legislation. The purpose behind the policy set out below is to provide a broad local framework for the management of information within the Council which may be supplemented from time to time by more specific policies dealing with particular issues.

- This Policy was prepared following consultation with the Data Protection Group and was considered by the Service Delivery Policy Overview Committee before being approved by the Council on the 23rd day of October 2002.
